57602 hauling the sleeper ECS (Stock: 17175 12142 10219 10616 10612 10594 10589 12161) heads west through Totnes at 14:57 forming: 5C99 10:28 Old Oak Common to Penzance T&RSMD. Tuesday 21st November 2017. The up sleeper on Sunday with 57604 evening failed on Hemerdon. The train was towed back to Plymouth with a Class 08 from Laira where passengers were transferred to an HST (43150 & 43194). On Monday 57603 was sent down light engine from Old Oak Common to Laira to haul the failed 57604 with the sleeper stock back to London for Monday evenings down sleeper service. However 57603 hauling 57604 failed with an air leak near Marley Tunnel on Monday evening, blocking the up line for nearly 2 hours! As a result Monday evenings down sleeper was an HST (43003 & 43023) resulting in Tuesday's ECS move with 57602

57605 failed at Newton Abbot at 04:30am whilst working 1C99 23:45 Paddington to Penzance "The Night Riviera." The failed sleepers were rescued by a mini-HST formed of 43193 + TS 42280 + 43041 which were dispatched from Laira. The most unusual formation was captured passing Totnes at 07:57am on 5C99 Newton Abbot to Laira. The formation was 43193, TS 42280, 43041, 57603, 17175, 12161, 10219, 10590, 10534, 10589 & 10532. Ex-Works 57602 top & tailed with 57310 head west through Totnes at 07:14am running 149 minutes late on 1C99 23:45 Paddington to Penzance 'The Night Riviera.' The delay was caused by a hot axle on a sleeper coach which was removed at Swindon. This was 57602's first working on the sleepers since June 2014 and has been at Brush works for many months under overhaul. Friday 2nd January 2015
57310 failed at Exeter St Thomas whilst working 1C99 23:45 Paddington to Penzance. The train was hauled back to Exeter St Davids by 66121 which was working the Alphington Road scrap metal train. Passengers were transferred on an HST which was commandeered off the 05:46 Exeter to Paddington. 57603 was sent light engine from Old Oak Common to pick up the failed set and take the train to Penzance. 57603 hauling 57310 head west through Totnes at 16:08 on 5Z79 14:52 Riverside to Penzance CS. 57310 hauling failed 57603 passes Totnes at 11:34 forming the 5Z79 11:05 Exeter St Davids to Penzance CS. 57603 had failed at Whiteball working the down sleepers and was assisted to Exeter by 66021 borrowed from 6C99. 57310 was send from Paddington to Exeter light engine to assist the train westwards. 57603 passes Totnes at 10:00am working the 5A40 07:55 Penzance to Old Oak Common. This was the stock of the previous evenings up sleepers which had failed at Penzance was substituted by an HST all the way to Paddington. The empty sleeper stock worked its way up during the daytime. Earlier that morning, 57605 working the down sleepers ran into a tree between Bodmin & Lostwithiel causing damage to the loco. 57603 was sent down light engine to work that evenings up sleeper service with the damaged 57605 on the rear. 57602 heads west through Totnes with the down "Night Riviera" running 2 hours late. 57603 was originally working the 1C99 23:45 Paddington to Penzance was declared a failure at Swindon with the Driver reporting a strong smell of fumes entering cab from engine room. 57602 on 1A40 21:15 Penzance to Paddington was taken off 1A40 at Swindon to work 1C99. 1A40 was terminated at Swindon and passengers transferred to an HST. One such morning was 20th June, the sleepers were retimed in their later slot from Exeter due to being diverted via Honiton. Virgin Thunderbird 57308 "Tin Tin" hauls failed 57604 with sleeper coaches northbound through Totnes at 15:00 forming the: 5Z70 12:35 Penzance Long Rock to Old Oak Common. 57604 failed on the previous nights up Sleeper with flat batteries at Penzance, resulting in an HST being used on the Night Riviera. 57308 on hire to FGW, covering for various failed FGW Class 57's and worked the down sleeper that morning and was used to take 57604 back to London. 57602 with The Night Riviera Stock consisting of 10612 10589 10532 10225 17174 12161 heads east through Totnes at 12:39 working: 1A88 10:05 Penzance to Paddington "The Cornish Riviera." The previous nights northbound sleepers had failed at Penzance so a HST set was used to work the sleeper service. That morning, Penzance was an HST set down, so the sleeper set (which had been fixed by then) was used to work 1A88. The train was rather busy, with sleeper berths locked out of use, there were only 2 and 1/2 day coaches! Friday 17th November 2006
